One of the ongoing challenges in my life was to attain good results in my N Level results. My setback was to believe in myself and to prove to the public that future prospect in life for normal technical stream is not gloomy or "end of the line" career. Ever since my PSLE results, I was considered a failure when entering the "hopeless zone" even though I got through to one of the top schools in the west. Nobody else except my mother supported and encouraged me. She is the one who gave me emotional support which inspired me to work & study real hard to prove others wrong. Another strong influence in my life is my mentor who is also my teacher, Mr Tan Suen Tien. From the first day of class he motivated me, convincing me that we "NT's" are able to do as much or better then the express students. The driving force from both individuals inculcates in me to excel tremendously.
Another obstacle which I had to overcome is my low self esteem. Ever since primary school level, I had always been very shy and tried to hide from any "limelight". I was bad at socializing and always ended up having people made decisions for me. My major breakthrough was going to Outward Bound Singapore Camp training. There, mentors and instructors instill and brought out confidence, independence and leadership values (which I myself find it hard to believe) that I 'm capable of. With My newfound confidence, I was able to participate in activities actively. In the camp, rock climbing and kayaking not only gave me the extra moral booster that I need to gain as an individual but also expanded my social circle of friends. I was more willing to interact not only with my schoolmates of all levels but also able to socialize outside my 'comfort zone'. The opportunity has given me to catch up on what I have missed in a motivating and an encouraging environment.
Thus situation like this makes challenges in life makes me a better student and build my character. I have also learned to appreciate those around me that is my mother and teachers, who have inspired me and I live to overcome obstacles and to prove myself that I can do more than I thought was possible. I realize that 'our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure.”
